A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.
The orange pinpoints are the location of each organized group of Daily Kos readers. If you'd like to join a group, click on a point and a box will pop up showing contact links. If you'd like to start a group, contact navajo for instructions. View Interactive Map of Daily Kos Regional Communities in a full screen version.
Welcome to WHAT IF Wednesday! WHAT IF... Bernie Sanders supporters turned Activist? Meteor Blades posited a genuinely interesting question yesterday (Tuesday, Aug 25). He wanted to know what might happen if that political revolution Bernie Sanders has been calling for showed up - at the corporate offices of the media - and demanded that the 4th Estate start doing it's job. I think that is a great idea. Such a great idea that I decided that perhaps we might talk about it this morning. Image courtesy of Vox Media via Photobucket Imagine what our political system might look like if the FEC (Federal Elections Commission) required local broadcast networks to provide free of charge, time for debates and other moderated discussions of the candidates, to discuss the Issues of the day affecting the community (local races) and the Nation at large (national races).

Candidates could no longer coast on TV ads cooked up by wordsmiths like Frank Luntz, they'd be judged based on their debate and discussion performances. Where their ignorance or knowledge would be on full display to the voters.

Speaking of TV ads, the Money Race would be reduced significantly, because the cost of those TV ads is high. Very high. At least $30K for a 30 second ad and millions for those five minute Mini-autobiographies. Take away the need for them, or at least 90% of them, and imagine how much less money would be involved in our elections process.

The bonus is that voters might actually learn something of note about these candidates, other than the soundbites they learn by rote and spout in response to any question asked, no matter what subject the question was about.

So what do you think? Are these ardent supporters of Team Sanders up to the challenge of building the movement, the political revolution that the candidate is calling for? If they can do it, should they start with just such an agenda of 'Petitioning government for Redress of grievances' when it comes to the Public airwaves, the 4th Estate and the Informing of the Electorate?

I hope you vote "AYE", as I do.

as always...
