Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another.

Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.

#Mournful Music Monday

I’m on the Left Coast, so I was up last night when the news broke about the slaughter in Las Vegas at a Country Music festival with Jason Aldean headlining. At that time it was being reported that there were two dead and over 50 injured. I was tired and went to bed thinking “not again, because nothing will happen just more dead people who were just unlucky to be at the wrong place at the wrong time”. Never dreaming that I’d wake up to nearly 60 dead and over 500 injured by a single man with over 10 firearms. A guy his brother in Florida has no clue as to why he would do this, much less where he got all of the guys, because his brother “only has a couple of handguns, I think”.

The video of the crowd of 22, 000+ running chaotically on the streets seeking shelter from the hail of bullets raining down on them from a 32nd story hotel room is like a fucking movie scene — until you remind yourself it’s real, not Memorex.

AND as if the death of so many weren’t enough bad news for this day?

Tom Petty has died. The music of my youth is all wrapped around his songs and lyrics. My favorite:

and more music from Tom

Not really much more to say about any of that, exept that I’m ready for the United States of America to take a cue from Australia. In 1996 there were 35 people shot dead and over 50 injured by a single gunman in Port Arthur; it was enough for the people of Australia. They changed their laws and removed a lot of firearms from public hands over a number of years. They haven’t had a single mass public shooting in the 21 years since then.

Perhaps we could learn something from them?

What I did over the weekend?

Not a lot, participated in a lot of social media sharing and discussing of Puerto Rico and the horrific situation so many of our fellow citizens find themselves in there AND the US Navy Ship Comfort has STILL not arrived in Puerto Rico, in fact right now it’s barely rounding Hatteras Island of the coast of North Carolina

Recovered from a bout with an early and (thank the godz) weak variant of some flu bug (the 3 and 12 year old grandkids were both puking their guts out Tues-Thurs), which just made me feel “meh” and sleepy for three days.

How was your weekend?
