Kitchen Table Kibitzing 10/16/2017 — #Random Music Monday

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another.

Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.

#Random Music Monday

Let me begin with an apology, because my very first impression, just a split second before my actual working brain went oh fuck oh fuck oh god how bad will it be, my little accumulator of random bits of information popped up and asked “who the hell is Jason Aldean?” On that subject, please consider planning a vacation to Las Vegas, economically they’ve taken a hit and that means everyday working people are losing jobs by the boatloads, on top of the enduring pain and misery left by a old, white man with dozens of guns and the will to kill.

Because for more than a dozen years, I quit listening to new music, except for the bits I’d hear on television commercials I didnt fast-forward through. Because I burnt a CD from my legally purchased CDs and popped it in and played it all of the time. There were about 30 songs on it and my now almost 13 year old granddaughter learned to sing every one of them by the time she was about 7 or 8. I saw it as a memory exercise and something we could do together. I play (self taught) an accoustic 6 string flat-top guitar and have been singing since I learned to talk. My mom’s family was very musical, Her dad and brothers played in his orchestra for movie openings in Portland, Oregon and grange dances in the region for over 20 years. My two uncles owned a country music bar in northwest Portland, Oregon for over 30 years and they got their chops playing venues like the now long-gone Red Steer (which was an old cattle yard site on Marine Drive West in Portland, along the Columbia River).

So what did I listen to all those years? Let’s see if I remember, because that CD went out the door accidentally when the engine in that old car died and I sold it to the junk yard circa 2009 iirc. Hmmm…

Favorite track was definitely this one

Sheryl Crow (my favorite artist on this tune, incuding the writer, Yusuf Islam formerly Cat Stevens) with The First Cut is the Deepest.

Now, imagine a five or six year old pipping up in tune, even if a couple octaves high, from the back seat of a 1992 Prizm 2 door sedan as this plays…

What I find to be one of John Denver’s lovliest tunes, from the Windsong album, Looking for Space. Only this man could take the 1980s plaint of many to “give me some space” and turn it into a haunting melody...

Raised on country and western music, this guy epitomizes what I remember from my youth. The ballads of life and love and loss. Don Williams, Listen to the Radio

The first song by Garth Brooks that really caught my attention wasn’t about bars or whiskey or the trouble they bring. It was this one, Lonesome Dove, about a long ago period in our history when love didn’t conquer all, but it lasted, no matter what. Garth is a storyteller with a guitar.

And because I love Garth, here’s a bit of variety from an Ellen Show appearance, well worth listening to. The show he talks about here, I watched it. It was terrific.

There were more and perhaps I’ll share some in a future posting.

What I did this weekend

Laundry, housework, watched some films.

Spent most of it thinking about the two stories I’ll post later this week, both about the Freeway Blogger. For me, writing a story here at Daily Kos doesn’t take a lot longer than how fast can I type it out… but that’s after I roll the idea I want to cover around in my head for a few days first. I seldom do re-writes, unless I put it out in the very early morning and go back in when I first get up before it can post, because those tend to have a lot of typos in them.

Was greatful to whatever godz may exist, for no tweets this weekend from #TinyhandsMagoo threatening to “totally destroy” another nation and it’s citizenry. But still would like everyone to do what I have begun to do on a weekly basis. Call my Republican US House member and suggest that she write a Bill of Impeachment and bring it to the House floor.

I give her reasons which could be decided to be “high crimes” by the House (the only qualifier necessary to bring a Bill of Impeachment). This week I’ll be using the “the words say Constitution” but in his Oath of Office, we all understand that it’s the symbol for “the People”. With his Executive Order killing the CSR payments to insurance companies for people with subsidies, he’s effectively writing a Death Sentence on working class folks like my daughter & son-in-law, so that they can’t afford to buy insurance for themselves.

I urge you all to do the same. (202) 224-3121 to call Congress.

Shoutout to all of our friends in California affected by the wildfires personally or through friends and family — hope you are all safe and well.

How was your weekend?
