Welcome to WHAT IF Wednesday! WHAT IF... you aren’t a believer at Christmas time?How do you spend the Holidays/Holy Days?
I watch my two adult children plan for the holidays, the youngest one still discusses what she is getting for family members with me. They enjoy an evening with their father’s family and then with friends. We all have a meal together at my sister’s house about a week or so after Christmas, when everyone can attend (and planning that with three young folks with odd job hours and usually one or two of them in Retail during the holiday season makes that a really tough job most years).
Child’s vision of Christmas HolidaysThis year, I’ve caved in and promised my 11 yr old grandchild (who lives here with me, her mom and little sister) that we would decorate the house this friday with lights. She said, “Nana, I can’t remember when you ever decorated for Christmas!” all excited at the prospect of some lights. I felt a little bad over that, but they have four different houses where there’ll be trees and lights and gifts and the whole enchilada — so it was only a little bad and for just a moment.
Non-denominational holiday decorationsFor those of you who aren’t among the Faithful, who won’t be preparing massive meals for a dozen or more relatives whom you only see every couple of years, who won’t be bringing home what might have been a perfectly good blue spruce to kill slowly over the next two to three weeks… what will you be doing at Christmastime?
Me? I’ll be working on my campaign website, it is in dire need of an update. I’ll be going to see at least a couple of movies with the wad of Costco Regal Cinemas movie tickets burning a hole in my wallet. I’ll be playing some games and contemplating the year now past and the one to come — and for me these are some big years.
Running for office has been about what I expected, and I’m grateful every day that I have spent years talking up strangers about politics, because I didn’t have to get over any shyness about that!
How about the rest of you? Classic Holiday, non-denominational Holiday, First People’s Solstice Celebration, or non-believer Festivus Celebration? However you spend the short days at the end of the year, I hope you find peace and love in sufficient measure unto the day.
