Welcome to WHAT IF Wednesday! WHAT IF... You put a nice dinner in the oven and 10 minutes in something went horribly wrong?Because that’s what happened to us tonight.
My daughter, Leah, picked up fresh pizza dough and some fillings for home-made calzone while her older child was at Karate practice at the East West Martial Arts dojo, and they all got home ready to eat!
So we went to work after turning the oven on to pre-heat. I rolled the pizza dough out into four calzone shells, with basil rolled right into the dough (totally yummy for calzone!). Leah cut up pineapple chunks, shredded sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheese and laid out the salami and sausage bits and spinach leaves.
We got two of them put together and ready to cook, laid out on parchment paper and loaded onto the top of a vented pizza cooking pan, fluted edges and vent holes in the top of the calzones.
Into the oven they went and I put the oven timer on for 22 mins and went into the living room to wait for our delicious home-made delights to turn all golden brown and YUMMY!
Except that about ten minutes in, Leah said, “Wait a minute...” and got up and went into the kitchen and a moment later yelled, “What the hell!!!”
What my kitchen looked like tonight! No offense intended to those who suffered during the actual fire depicted here.I dropped my Kindle and ran in and there were BILLOWING waves of smoke pouring out of the oven and those two calzones looked like calzone-shaped charcoal briquettes. It was just sad. I’m still sad now, and it’s been almost two hours. I had to go out and fetch something for eats (I got a Subway Turkey and the rest of them wanted Taco Hell, so they ate burritos and tacos), because it turns out that what happened was the stove’s Broiler element turned itself on!
I had to go to the Circuit Breaker Panel and flip switches until I could find the one for the 220 volt single circuit stove line. When we turned off the oven power dial upon opening it up and finding the smoke, I saw that the broiler was on. My daughter thought I had turned it on, because she had turned the oven on to pre-heat. But I only set the timer. But the stupid broiler units didn’t turn off when we turned the oven power switch to off! Just sat there all cherry-red. So then we had to do the circuit breaker drill. Of course it was one of the switches with the ink on it, telling where it goes to, all worn away.
So. Have any of you ever had a stove go rogue on you, ruining a perfectly good meal and scaring the daylights out of you by not turning off when you shut the switch off?
