Think Zombie Apocalypse or Big Bad Virus or Comet Meets Earth or any number of significant events, none of which any of us has (so far!) had to live through.
But what if we did, and you did, could you continue to feed you and yours, without a convenient grocery store (at least in the long run)?
There are ten million and one things you'd need, and most of them would require some civilization to continue to make them available, like Glass jars for canning. Do you know how recent re-usable glass canning jars are? 1858. Less than 200 years ago.
How about seed to plant for next year. Do you know how to prep and harvest seeds, because there won't be a "shipped via Amazon in 2 days!" service available anymore.
You can save vegetable seeds from your garden produce to plant next year. Seed saving involves selecting suitable plants from which to save seed, harvesting seeds at the right time, and storing them properly over the winter. Even beginners can learn this stuff fairly easily.
It's not rocket science, but if your family depended upon those seeds to last the next year, you'd need to know this stuff by heart, cause the Internet is one of those things which would be going away...
You'd also need to bone up on what fruits and vegetables are conducive to your local climate - because if you try and grow foodstuff not native to your region, you might all starve next summer in the midst of a world in full bloom.
How about what foodstuffs contain the necessary vitamins and minerals to sustain healthy human life? From Vitamin A to Zinc, we need a lot of different minerals and vitamins. Again, best to learn this stuff before you need to know it.
As amateur historians know, civilization didn't really take off until we learned to harvest large amounts of protein, and not just fruits, vegetable and grains. So, unless you're a Vegan you'll need to learn some animal husbandry, even if it's just on how to raise chickens.
Does that seem like a lot to learn? I think so. Maybe we shouldn't give up on Civilization just yet, then. Perhaps no meteor will come slamming through our atmosphere to wipe out most of us. But our own behaviors are changing our biosphere every single day.
So if you don't want to have to learn the equivalent of two PhD degrees in lightening fast time, I suggest you do what you can now, before some of this stuff becomes second nature to your grandchildren...
Fight back against #BigOil in your local community and globally, because
Image courtesy Joe Brusky of the Overpass Light Brigade of OccupyRiverWest.comA suggestion? Sign this petition asking US Attorney General Loretta Lynch to charge Big Oil under the RICO Act, because it's sure looking like Big Oil did exactly what BigTobacco did - they discovered their products were doing something horrendously bad and then they proceeded to cover it up and lie their asses off about knowing it ... for decades.
Petition brought to you by Climate Hawks and via Meteor Blades' diary from Tuesday:
as always...
