Some of my favorite books over the years which have been read and re-read will be the focus of this series, as long as it lasts. I’ll cover a different genre and at least two books in that genre in each edition.

Genre — Paranormal

This genre has stories about people with extra abilities, witches and werewolves and vampires galore. Necromancers to mermaids (although some would place the latter only in fairy tales, not all mermaids sing with lobsters, some drag unsuspecting victims to the bottom of the sea for as a snack).

Charlaine Harris— The Sookie Stackhouse tales

Charlaine Harris brings to life in a riotous fashion the tales of Sookie Stackhouse and the vampires who are the only human-ish folk whose minds she cannot read — and all of the joy and pain some of them cause her.

In the first novel in this series, Dead Until Dark, we meet Sookie (telepath) and Bill Compton (vampire)..

blurb from Amazon

Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Bon Temps, Louisiana. She's quiet, doesn't get out much, and tends to mind her own business—except when it comes to her “disability.” Sookie can read minds. And that doesn’t make her too dateable. Then along comes Bill Compton. He’s tall, dark, handsome—and Sookie can’t hear a word he’s thinking. He’s exactly the type of guy she’s been waiting for all her life... But Bill has a disability of his own: he’s a vampire with a bad reputation. And when a string of murders hits Bon Temps—along with a gang of truly nasty bloodsuckers looking for Bill—Sookie starts to wonder if having a vampire for a boyfriend is such a bright idea.

Harris has a wonderful way of getting you into the heads of her characters, human with or without special abilities, vampire, werewolf and making them all seem relatable. I read these stories as soon as the next book published, for years.

Kim Harrison— The Hollows

The first novel in this series is Dead Witch Walking. Book number 18 in the series will publish in just four days.

Blurb/summary from the Fandom Wiki URL

After years of dead-end assignments and the frustration of repeated mistakes on the job, Rachel breaks her I.S. contract with a wish from a leprechaun she is to tag for tax evasion. While Denon, her former boss could care less about Rachel leaving, she's also taking Ivy Tamwood with her, Denon's best runner. Infuriated and unable to take it out on Ivy, Denon puts a hit out on Rachel, effectively destroying her property and evicting her from her apartment.

She takes up residence in an old church with Ivy, with whom she starts an independent runner service, Vampiric Charms Inc, along with the pixie Jenks. Determined to shake her death mark, she decides to root out Trent Kalamack illegal brimstone dealings. Sneaking into Kalamack's estate by taking the form of a mink, she is caught in his office and caged. Kalamack tells her of his plan to hold her as a caged mink on his desk until she begs to be released and she slowly starves herself, only taking carrots from Sara Jane Gradenko, Trent's newly hired replacement secretary, who she feels is as trapped as herself.

The I.S. is a sort of supernatural police force, and Rachel Morgan’s employer at the start of the first book in the series. You can read an excerpt from the author at her URL here: https://www.kimharrison.net/BookPages/DWW/DWW.html

Kelley Armstrong— The Otherworld

From her URL on this series

The series began in 2001 with Bitten, featuring werewolf Elena Michaels. It continued for thirteen novels, introducing other supernatural characters–witches, ghosts, necromancers, half-demons–and spinning off to their stories, and expanding the series into a multi-narrator fantasy world. Past characters continued to appear in guest roles and often returned to narrate new novels or short fiction.

I read these books as they published, beginning in 2001. The series was popular enough to be set as a TV series based on Elena Michaels story, Bitten

What I enjoyed about these characters is their struggle to survive in a world unaware of their existence, and in a community of beings who are violent and dangerous.

blurb from Armstrong’s URL

Elena Michaels is the world’s only female werewolf. And she’s tired of it. Tired of a life spent hiding and protecting, a life where her most important job is hunting down rogue werewolves. Tired of a world that not only accepts the worst in her–her temper, her violence–but requires it. Worst of all, she realizes she’s growing content with that life, with being that person.

So she left the Pack and returned to Toronto where she’s trying to live as a human. When the Pack leader calls asking for her help fighting a sudden uprising, she only agrees because she owes him. Once this is over, she’ll be squared with the Pack and free to live life as a human. Which is what she wants. Really.

If you have read any of these books or any Paranormal story you’d like to talk about, c’mon in, sit down and put your feet up and Let’s Talk BOOKS!
